Start with the quick checks
When a photo widget is not updating on Android, rule out the simple causes before changing any settings.
- Open DuoFrame and check whether the new photo appears in the app. If it is missing there too, the photo has not reached your phone yet.
- Check that your phone is online and that the sender finished sending.
- Remember that snaps expire 24 hours after they are sent. An old photo leaving the widget is expected.
- Update DuoFrame from Google Play, then restart your phone.
- Remove the widget from your home screen and add it again.
Why Android delays widget updates
Android saves battery by limiting what apps can do in the background. Doze pauses background work while the phone is idle, and App Standby gives apps you rarely open less time to run. Many phone makers add their own, stricter battery managers on top.
A photo widget needs a little background time to download a new picture and redraw itself. If your phone puts DuoFrame to sleep, photos can arrive late or only appear after you open the app. The steps below let DuoFrame refresh without turning off battery protection for every other app.
Samsung Galaxy (One UI)
Samsung phones can put apps to sleep automatically. Menu names vary slightly between One UI versions.
- Open Settings > Apps > DuoFrame > Battery and choose Unrestricted.
- Open Settings > Battery (on some versions, Battery and device care > Battery) > Background usage limits.
- Check that DuoFrame is not listed under Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps. If it is, remove it.
- Optionally, add DuoFrame to Never sleeping apps.
Google Pixel and other phones with stock Android
Pixel phones use Adaptive Battery, which learns which apps you use and limits the rest.
- Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > DuoFrame.
- Tap App battery usage.
- Turn on Allow background usage if you see it, then choose Unrestricted.
- On older Android versions, look for Battery > Unrestricted, or Battery optimization > All apps > DuoFrame > Don’t optimize.
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO (HyperOS and MIUI)
Xiaomi phones are known for closing background apps aggressively, so photo widgets on these phones often need two settings changed.
- Open Settings > Apps > Manage apps > DuoFrame.
- Turn on Autostart.
- Tap Battery saver (or Battery) and choose No restrictions.
- If your phone offers it, open the recent apps screen and lock DuoFrame so it is not cleared along with other apps.
OnePlus, OPPO and realme
These phones share similar battery settings. The exact wording depends on your software version.
- Open Settings > Apps > App management > DuoFrame > Battery usage.
- Turn on Allow background activity, or choose Unrestricted.
- Turn on Allow auto launch if the option is shown.
Other Android phones
Other brands use different names for the same idea. Open DuoFrame’s app info page and look for battery, background activity, or auto launch settings. The Don’t Kill My App project keeps up-to-date guides for many phone brands.
Check Data Saver and notifications
Data Saver can stop apps from using mobile data in the background. Open Settings > Network & internet (Connections on Samsung) > Data Saver and allow unrestricted data for DuoFrame, or turn Data Saver off.
Notifications and widget updates are related but separate. On Android 13 and later, DuoFrame asks for permission to show notifications. If you turned that off, photos may still reach the widget, but you will not be alerted when they arrive. Turn it back on in Settings > Apps > DuoFrame > Notifications.
Custom launchers
Some third-party home screen apps handle widgets differently. If the widget only misbehaves with a custom launcher, try your phone’s default launcher for a day to see whether the problem follows.
If the photo still does not update
Run a test: lock your phone with DuoFrame closed and ask a friend to send a snap. If the photo appears in the app but not on the widget, remove and re-add the widget. If it does not appear in the app at all, check your connection and that you are still friends in the app.
When you contact support through the app, include your phone model, Android version, DuoFrame version, and which of these steps you tried. Most photo widget update problems on Android come down to a single battery setting, so that list usually points straight to the fix.
